Robert Saunders
Robert Saunders (b. 1940) has devoted the majority of his more than 60-year career to the art of visual poetry. Wide-ranging in technique but cohesive in objective, his works are about the systems of language and communication, often featuring numbers and the letters of the alphabet in a variety of orientations. Many of his works seek to achieve the effects of verbal communication without such language-based symbols. Verbal content is instead suggested through the use of intersecting or non-intersecting lines and forms. These remind us of thoughts and words that intersect to create meaning (or that trail off into nothingness).
